Overwatch's Symmetra Gets Massive Overhaul
It’s been some time coming, but Blizzard finally announced today that Symmetra is having changes made to her abilities to help her become a more viable Overwatch character. In his latest developer diary, Jeff Kaplan goes through some of the changes the team is making to Symmetra to make her less of a “situational” choice.
One of her greatest criticisms was that she was only useful in a defense match on the first point, due to the nature of her Teleporter Ultimate. In order to combat that, the biggest change Blizzard have made is to give her a second Ultimate.
She can still use her Teleporter like before, but once that outlives its usefulness, she can collapse it to build a Shield Generator. The Shield Generator creates a shield for each team member in a substantial radius and importantly, ignores line of sight. This means Symmetra can hide the Shield Generator somewhere out of the way, while the massive radius means it will still do its job effectively.
It’s also important to note that the Shield Generator makes far stronger shields than the shields she was able to generate before, thankfully, because she no longer has that ability. Her shields are being replaced with her Photon Barrier, a large shield not unlike that of Reinhardt or Winston, which—once toggled—will move along a trajectory.
Finally, Symmetra will be able to carry around all six of her turrets at a time and deploy them instantly, rather than deploying three and waiting for a cooldown to deploy the others.
These are some pretty major changes for Symmetra which will hopefully see her used at the professional level more often. She’s an interesting support, we can’t wait to see what she does for the metagame. Watch the full developer diary with Jeff Kaplan below for the full story.
