Another NBA franchise has taken the plunge and acquired a stake in an esports organization. The Miami Heat and Misfits have announced their partnership this week, which will see the Misfits rebranded in Heat colors.
“The Miami Heat pride ourselves on being innovative in all aspects of sports and business,” said Nick Arison, Miami Heat CEO. “For us, it made perfect sense to partner with Misfits, a young and ambitious franchise in a sport that is blazing a trail in terms of 21st-century recreational competition amongst millennials.”
Misfits are a multidisciplinary team with rosters in League of Legends, Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm, Hearthstone, and Super Smash Bros.
"This partnership will be the catalyst and foundation to our continued expansion of the Misfits organization into a global esports brand and company," Ben Spoot, Misfits’ CEO said in a statement. "The Heat—innovators and leaders in traditional sports—will help Misfits to unlock meaningful value across all facets of our business."
Miami Heat is the second NBA team to move into an esports partnership. In September of last year, the Philadelphia 76ers purchased two teams, Team Dignitas and Team Apex, and combined them under a single banner.
