Alibaba Invests $150 Million in Esports

The Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has announced that they will be pouring a massive $150 million into esports. Alisports, their sports-centric offshoot, recently announced the big news as part of a ten-year strategic partnership with the city administration of Changzhou, China.

Considered to be the esports capital of China, Changzhou is hosting the World Electronics Sports Games (WESG) tournamentwhich is taking place right nowand will continue to do so for the next three years.

On top of this, the partners plan to hold further WESG  events between 2017 and 2019 including the global finals, China finals, and the Asia-Pacific finals.

As Dot Esports originally noted, market analysts Newzoo put esports global revenue at $500 million this year, which really puts an investment of $150 million in perspective.

WESG runs between January 12th and January 15th this year and has a prize pool of a whopping $5.5 million.
